Twemes.com is Shutting Down

In January 2008 a weekend experiment with hashtags turned into Twemes.com.  While it was a side project, we upgraded and maintained it over the years but it has languished for quite some time and we have decided to shut it down.  We thank all of those that have used Twemes.com over the years and I hope that this shutdown does not inconvenience many.

If there are any questions, please contact me geoff@twemes.com.

The #twemes are flowing again! Thanks to a new data stream from Twitter, http://Twemes.com is once again able to find most tagged tweets.

Twemes Flowing Again

Thanks to access to a new data stream from Twitter, Twemes is once again able to catch most tagged tweets.  Twitter cannot guarantee 100% access to tweets but it should be fairly close.

Down But Not Out

As many of your have already noticed, Twemes.com has not been able find all tagged tweets over the last few days.  This is due to Twitter’s decisions to shutdown and/or limit access to a number of their APIs.  Whether by design or by accident, Twemes.com now only has limited access to Twitter.  We have made appeals to Twitter staff to help us continue to keep Twemes.com in operation but those requests have had no impact on our access to the Twitter API.

We are hoping that Twitter may yet re-enable our access to their API but for the foreseeable future, Twemes.com will only be able to access a small percentage of the tagged tweets.

We are working on ways to reincarnate Twemes.com so don’t count us out yet!

The Twitter API is partially back but we are only getting a small part of the data that we need.

The Twitter API that we use for Twemes.com broke last night. No new tweets will show up at Twemes.com until Twitter fixes this.

Tweme Aggregation

Twemes.com now allows you to follow multiple tags at the same time.  If you put multiple tags into the search box, page will be created that will aggregate those tags.  This will work for RSS feeds as well as the Tweme widget.  This is great for events where you know that different people will use various tags for the event.

From Fire to Ice

Due to the overwhelming demand for a change of color scheme, we have switch from our original “Fire” theme to an “Ice” theme. We haven’t lost the crazy background, just changed it’s color! We’ve got to keep something for the designers to complain about!

The mobile website (m.twemes.com) has also been transformed to these cooler colors. As an added bonus, the mobile website also has had some work done to it to speed it up. WE also added an additional “latest twemes” page similar in function to the Twemes.com main page. It shows you the 10 most recently tagged messages.

New Blocking Feature

Twemes.com has added a new blocking feature that will allow you to permanently block those who’s posts you find objectionable for some reason.  All past and future post from that person will no longer be displayed to you but this will not affect other people’s view of those same posts.  Be careful using this feature as once blocked, there is currently no way to unblock them short of deleting the cookie from your browser.  We use cookies to connect this information to your web browser so if you access Twemes.com from multiple web browsers you will have to block these users in each browser.

To use the block feature just click the link at the bottom of a tweet that says “block …”.

Behind The Scene Upgrades

Over the last couple of days we’ve made some changes on the backend of Twemes.com.  We have a much more reliable connection to Twitter’s flow of tweets.  We’ve improved the performance of various web pages through the use of better caching and adding additional resources.

Contact @twemes if you see any problems.
